When do you know it's time to see a doctor?

The human body is a complex network of bones, nerves, ligaments, tendons, and many other structures that work together in harmony to facilitate movement. Because of our intricate anatomies, factors like poor posture, high-impact exercise, and even the natural aging process can easily cause aches and pains to occur. Many instances of common musculoskeletal ailments like low back pain and mild joint stiffness can be effectively managed at home, but this isn’t always the case. So, how can you tell if it’s time to visit an orthopaedic doctor?

As a general rule of thumb, you should consult with an orthopaedic doctor if you develop any musculoskeletal symptoms that concern you. This may include joint or muscle pain, reduced range of motion, or inability to put weight on or use a limb as you normally would. If you have a sports related injury, it may be time to visit a doctor

More specifically, you should consider visiting an orthopaedic doctor if:

  • You have muscle or joint pain that gradually worsens

  • You are experiencing symptoms that interfere with everyday responsibilities

  • Your symptoms are accompanied by numbness or tingling sensations (a sign of nerve compression)

  • You have previously received orthopaedic treatment that has proven unsuccessful

  • Your symptoms developed following an injury, such as a fall or car accident

  • Your symptoms do not respond to self-care measures like rest, ice therapy, and over-the-counter medications
