Mark E. Baratz, MD

Mark Baratz, MD, is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He served as vice chairman of Orthopedic Surgery at Allegheny General Hospital and director of Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery until 2012.
Dr. Baratz was the hand surgery consultant to the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1999 to 2012. He is president-elect of the American Association of hand Surgery.
Dr. Baratz has nearly 100 published articles, book chapters, and textbooks, and is an associate editor for the American and European Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, and the Journal of Hand Surgery. Dr. Baratz has been recognized as one of Pittsburgh’s “Top Docs” since 2004. He has been elected to America’s Top Doctors, America’s Top Orthopedists, and he received Patients’ Choice Compassionate Doctor Recognition.
He specializes in the care of high-level athletes; arthroscopy and arthroplasty of the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand; care of arthritis; and conditions affecting nerves and blood vessels. Dr. Baratz has extensive experience with the care of pediatric upper-extremity conditions.

Stephen F. Conti, MD, is a graduate of New Jersey Medical School in Newark, N.J. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Hospital for Joint Diseases at NYU in New York, N.Y., as well as a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery from the Center for Orthopedic Care in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Before joining Orthopaedic Specialists—UPMC, Dr. Conti was clinical professor for orthopaedic surgery at Temple University School of Medicine.
He is a two-time recipient of the Golden Mallet Award for excellence in orthopaedic education, and has been consistently voted by his peers as one of the Best Doctors in America since 2002, and a Best Doctor in Pittsburgh. Dr. Conti is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, and has authored over 50 peer-reviewed scientific articles on the foot.

Mark A. Fye, MD, is a graduate of Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia.
He completed a residency in general surgery and orthopaedic surgery at the Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut. He completed a fellowship in spinal surgery at Case Western Reserver University School of Medicine, University Hospital of Cleveland, in Ohio.
Dr. Fye is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery and his areas of clinical expertise include spinal surgery, neck and back care, disc herniations, stenosis, and osteoporotic spinal fractures.

Thomas B. Hughes Jr., MD, is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Allegheny General Hospital, as well as a fellowship in hand, upper-extremity, and microvascular surgery at Brown University in Providence, RI. Dr.
Hughes is a member of Orthopaedic Specialists—UPMC and is a Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He holds various leadership posts with the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Association for Hand Surgery, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.

James N. Irvine Jr., MD

James N. Irvine, Jr., M.D. is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at UPMC, as well as a fellowship in sports medicine, with a focus on cartilage reconstruction, at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City.
Before joining Orthopaedic Specialists – UPMC, Dr. Irvine was in practice at Mid Atlantic Permanente Medical Group in Alexandria, Virginia.
Dr. Irvine is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. His areas of expertise include cartilage restoration, arthroscopy of the knee and shoulder as well as knee and shoulder replacements.

Dean G. Sotereanos, MD, graduated from the Hahnemann University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at UPMC, and a fellowship in hand and microvascular surgery at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Before joining Orthopaedic Specialists–UPMC, Dr. Sotereanos was professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Drexel University College of Medicine, West Penn Allegheny Health System campus.
Since 2009, he has repeatedly been named one of the Top Doctors in Pittsburgh by Pittsburgh Magazine, and is a member of the American Association for Hand Surgery, the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society, and the American Society for Surgery of the Shoulder and Elbow.

Periklis A. Papapetropoulos, MD

Periklis A. Papapetropoulos, MD earned his medical degree from the Iuliu Hatieganu School of Medicine in Romania and completed his residency at Hatzikosta General Hospital, Ioannina in Greece.
Dr. Papapetropoulos completed his hand research fellowship at Duke University Medical Center, his foot and ankle fellowship at UPMC, and his total joint fellowship at Allegheny General Hospital. In addition to English, he is fluent in Greek and Romanian.
Dr. Papapetropoulos is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery by the Greece-European Union and a member of Orthopaedic Specialists—UPMC.

Christopher C. Schmidt, MD

Christopher C. Schmidt, M.D., is a nationally distinguished Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon. He serves as the Director of the Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He specializes in rotator cuff repairs, shoulder and elbow replacements, instability repairs, nerve reconstructions, fracture care, and distal biceps re-attachments.
He has published over 150 book chapters and peer-reviewed scientific articles / abstracts on rotator cuff surgery, total shoulder replacements, reverse total shoulder replacements, total elbow replacements, arthroscopic arthritic elbow surgery, distal biceps re-attachments, ligament repairs, stem cells, growth factors, and soft tissue healing. His two most recent peer review book chapters are on rotator cuff pathology and shoulder replacement surgery. Dr. Schmidt was nominated twice for the Charles S. Neer Award, given by the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. As acknowledgment for his research on growth factors, he was awarded the prestigious O’Donoghue Sports Injury Research Award, given by the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine. Further, his patients selected him as one of Pennsylvania’s Favorite Physicians and he was elected by his peers as one of Pittsburgh Magazine’s “Best Doctors”.
Dr. Schmidt participates in a number of educational and volunteer governance committees for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. He was elected by his peers to serve as the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon's representative on the AAOS Clinical Practice Guidelines Committee for Full Thickness Rotator Cuff Tears. The national guidelines are designed to improve patient care through evidence based medicine.
