Morton’s Neuroma

Morton’s neuroma is a relatively common condition that occurs when the tissue that surrounds one of the nerves that leads to the toes begins to thicken. The result is often an intense and burning pain around the ball of the foot that can make it difficult to move around comfortably. Numbness and tingling sensations may also occur.

What causes Morton’s neuroma?

Any factor that irritates or pressures a nerve can lead to Morton’s neuroma. For example, this condition may develop as a result of:

  • Frequently wearing high heels or shoes with a narrow toe box
  • Other foot issues, such as a hammer toe, bunion, or flatfeet
  • Overuse or injury to the foot, particularly sports injuries that can occur during running, skiing, or other high impact activities

To reduce your risk of developing Morton’s neuroma, consider wearing comfortable shoes with normal toe boxes and avoiding activities that place undue strain on your feet.

What does Morton’s neuroma treatment involve?

Morton’s neuroma treatment can vary from person to person. Initial treatment approaches often include conservative measures like arch supports and orthotic devices that are worn inside the shoe to relieve pressure on the nerve. Medication, cold therapy, and anti-inflammatory injections may also prove effective in some cases. Patients with more severe neuroma may benefit from surgery to take pressure off the nerve or remove the thickened portion of the nerve.

The best way to determine your ideal treatment approach is to consult with an experienced orthopedic physician, such as the professionals at Orthopaedic Specialists in Greater Pittsburgh.
