Rotator Cuff Injuries

Rotator cuff injuries are common in athletes and individuals who perform repetitive arm movements, such as baseball players, tennis players, painters, movers, and construction workers. The rotator cuff is a group of tendons and muscles that hold the components of the shoulder – a ball and socket joint – securely in place.

What are the symptoms of a rotator cuff injury?

Symptoms of rotator cuff injuries can vary from patient to patient, but often include:

  • Arm weakness
  • A dull, aching pain felt deep in the shoulder
  • Discomfort while using your arm to brush your hair, reach into cabinets, and perform other actions

Shoulder pain following activity is quite common and doesn’t always signal an underlying medical condition. However, be sure to speak with a medical professional if your pain persists despite self-care measures like rest and ice therapy. If you have unexplained arm weakness, seek medical care right away.  If left untreated, certain rotator cuff injuries may result in permanent loss of motion.

What does rotator cuff injury treatment involve?

Physical therapy is often used to facilitate healing in the rotator cuff and improve range of motion. In cases where the rotator cuff is substantially torn or does not respond to conservative approaches, surgery may be recommended. There are several types of surgeries that may be used to address rotator cuff injuries, ranging from minimally invasive arthroscopies to total shoulder joint replacement.
