Golfer’s Elbow

Despite what its name may suggest, golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis) is not exclusive to golfers. Rather, this condition – which is characterized by pain where the forearm muscle attaches to the inside of the elbow joint – can develop in anyone who frequently performs high-impact movements that involve the elbow, including painters, weight lifters, plumbers, tennis players, and woodworkers.

What are the symptoms of golfer’s elbow?

Golfer’s elbow can produce symptoms slowly or suddenly, and discomfort typically worsens while using the elbow. Tell-tale symptoms of golfer’s elbow include:

  • Elbow stiffness
  • Pain and tenderness around the inner elbow and forearm
  • Numbness or tingling sensations throughout the arm and fingers, especially the ring and pinky fingers
  • A weakened wrist joint or grip

What does golfer’s elbow treatment entail?

Your ideal course of golfer’s elbow treatment will depend on the severity of your symptoms. For many, conservative approaches like temporarily avoiding pain-triggering activities, using ice therapy, wearing an elbow brace, and stretching forearm muscles can resolve discomfort. In more advanced cases, injection therapy or minimally invasive surgery to remove scar tissue may be recommended.
